Establish the facts.
Trace ownership, check claims and connect records. Keep a clear account of where each finding came from.
Practical intelligence training
Black Chamber is ROSSAD’s training initiative for practical intelligence work. Develop your skills in research, source conversations and analysis through taught sessions, controlled exercises and reviewed assignments.
Research. Human enquiry. Sound judgement.
Discover Black ChamberThe purpose
A convincing story can survive a quick search. A sound conclusion has to survive scrutiny.
You learn by working a brief: identify the question, examine records, plan source conversations and explain what the evidence supports.
Black Chamber is for individuals developing an intelligence capability and organisations training their teams. Each programme has a defined practical output and a clear point of entry.
Trace ownership, check claims and connect records. Keep a clear account of where each finding came from.
Plan conversations, listen carefully and test an account without leading the person giving it.
Weigh competing explanations. State your confidence, the gaps and what could change your assessment.
Ways to train
Improve a specific skill in a workshop, complete a defined research assignment, or develop a broader capability through the operator programme.
Explore the learning objectives, practical work and assessment for each route. Private programmes are designed around an organisation’s objectives.
The flagship programme
Plan an investigation, verify sources, conduct a structured conversation and present an assessment. Use AI with care and keep a record that another person can check.
Practise neutral questioning, assess conflicting accounts and verify unusual requests. Work through realistic conversations, including AI-enabled impersonation scenarios.
Investigate a defined commercial claim using supplied material, structured research and working templates. Check an AI-assisted summary and defend your own conclusion.
Develop a defined team capability in counterparty assessment, identity verification or decisions under uncertainty. Practise on a tailored scenario and review the result against agreed criteria.

Discuss the right programmeThe training draws on established approaches to intelligence assessment, investigative interviewing and digital verification. Each programme explains which principles it adapts and how you practise them.

Inside the practice
The answer is rarely in one document.
Work through a short training example, including an AI-assisted summary that needs checking.
An impressive track record.
A warm introduction.
One decision still to make.
Illustrative training scenario.
All details are fictional.
A prospective supplier says it has delivered three comparable projects. An adviser you know has introduced the business and supplied two references.
Your brief is to assess whether its claimed experience stands up to independent checks before your client commits.
“The supplier has a verified record of three completed projects. Independent references confirm delivery.”
This deliberately flawed training summary goes beyond the records. Compare each statement with the evidence before relying on it.
Neither claim has been established. The supplier’s own statement lists the projects. The references came through the introducing adviser and have not confirmed delivery directly. Record both claims as unverified and identify the independent checks required.
Choose an initial recommendation to see the reasoning.
Black Chamber is ROSSAD’s training initiative. ROSSAD provides private intelligence and strategic advice on counterparties, markets, technology and sensitive disputes. Our training develops the research discipline and analytical judgement required to contribute to that work.
Explore ROSSADBlack Chamber is ROSSAD's practical intelligence training initiative. It offers focused workshops, research and analysis practice, an integrated operator programme and private training for organisations. ROSSAD provides the related private intelligence and strategic advisory services.
A practitioner who can carry out a defined part of a lawful investigation, keep a traceable evidence record and brief the person responsible for the decision. The ROSSAD Operator Programme combines research, human enquiry, operational security and analysis in supervised training cases.
People Intelligence is a 3.5-hour workshop on source conversations and verification. Intelligence Practice focuses on documentary research and analytical writing. The ROSSAD Operator Programme combines research, source conversations, operational security and analysis over a continuing case. Private Programmes are tailored to an organisation's objectives.
Training is delivered through live sessions, practical exercises and feedback in a closed group. The operator programme and research laboratory also include independent assignments. Your written programme brief confirms the facilitator, timetable, materials and delivery arrangements.
Selected principles from PHIA's analytical standards, the PEACE interviewing framework and the Berkeley Protocol inform relevant exercises. Listening skills draw on OARS, and AI-related checks refer to selected NIST risks. Each programme page explains the application and scope, with links to the primary references.
Start with a short enquiry. We discuss your objectives and share the relevant session or cohort brief. It sets out dates, delivery, facilitation, the full fee and booking terms. The operator programme is preparing its first cohort; its eight-week structure is a proposed format. No payment is taken through this website.
Motivated participants can discuss supervised practice and relevant work opportunities according to their results, interests and available assignments. Collaboration is considered separately and requires its own agreement. Programme admission does not guarantee employment.
AI can assist with reviewing, organising and translating material. Participants must check material claims against the underlying sources, disclose relevant AI assistance and follow the agreed handling arrangements. Exercises also examine synthetic identities and unsupported generated summaries.
Each programme begins with a starting task, includes feedback during practice and ends with an exercise appropriate to its level. Review considers source traceability, neutral questioning, disclosed AI assistance and the reasoning behind a recommendation. The programme pages set out the criteria and any revision arrangements.
Exercises use fictional or appropriately sanitised material. Handling and sharing arrangements are agreed before sensitive information is exchanged. Please keep your initial enquiry free of live case details and third-party personal information.
